Description
Photograph of a group of unidentified individuals eating langar at the Akali Singh Sikh temple (gurdwara) in Vancouver, British Columbia (B.C.). Among the group are Sophia Leung and Gian Dhesi. Individuals had gathered at the gurdwara (sikh temple) for Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee Medal Ceremony. Gian Dhesi was the recipient of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Canadian society.

Langar is the communal meal shared by all who come to the gurdwara (Sikh temple), and it has been a part of the Sikh community since the time of Guru Nanak (the first Sikh guru).

A social worker by profession, Sophia Leung has distinguished herself as a family counsellor, writer and lecturer, and consultant in Asian culture, art and business. Her research on the impact of adolescent learning disabilities on their behavioral problems, and on the cross-cultural differences in patterns of child abuse, has effected positive changes in therapeutic approaches in both China and North America. She was awarded the Member of the Order of Canada in 1994.

The Akali Singh Sikh Society of Vancouver is a prominent Sikh organization based in Vancouver, British Columbia. As a not-for-profit organization, the society plays a crucial role in promoting Sikhism and providing religious education to its members. Central to their activities is the Gurdwara (Sikh temple), which serves as a spiritual and community centre for the Sikh community. The Akali Sikh Gurdwara was first established in 1952, but the current larger structure was constructed in 1981. The society offers religious services, educational programs, and community initiatives aligned with Sikh principles.
