Photograph of Sucha Singh Claire addressing the audience at an event organised by the Central Association of Punjabi Writers in North America. The event was held at South Hall Banquet in Vancouver, British Columbia (B.C.).
Sucha Singh Claire is an activist and author. Originally from Panjab, India, Claire moved to England in 1962 in search of better work opportunities. During the seven years he spent in Coventry, working as a factory machine operator, Claire observed a number of ethnic fabric shops catering to the South Asian community opening in the area. Upon arriving in Vancouver, Claire sought to do the same. Claire moved to Canada in 1969 and since then has been an active member of the community, working hard to maintain the Panjabi culture in Canada. After noticing the lack of Panjabi clothing stores in Vancouver, Claire decided to open his own store in 1970. This encouraged other members of the Panjabi society to open their own stores, and this was the beginning of the area now known as Punjabi Market. He worked hard alongside the Punjabi Market Associate, of which he was a president, to advocate for Panjabi rights. Claire actively engaged with the Panjabi language and writing, after he was asked to write articles for the Indo-Canadian Times newspaper. He has written around 250 articles to date.
